Perfect! On the other side, I roll my eyes just as much if not more at know it all IT guys. My brother’s friend was one of those you couldn’t tell anything. I remember he was sitting on my brother’s Win3 computer and typed “delete *.*” not realizing he was in the Windows directory. And even confirmed the delete at prompt. Idiot. You can bet I never let him forget that one.

While we’re venting about being in IT, yesterday I had to sit and justify buying business computers with their longer, on-site warranties and business support instead of cheaper consumer grade computers. One of our senior managers fancies himself a “computer guy” and wants cheap and flashy over dull and reliable. And I actually lost. The first time a user’s computer has to be shipped back to a depot and is gone for a month I’m just going to smile.

Do not educate the end user by yelling at them. It’s not going to work. Teachers need to be calm and patient. I understand of course that a rally may not present the opportunity for calm and patience, but if you are at that point, just shut it down, panicked yelling isn’t going to help anyone.

Exactly. My greatest respect goes out to IT people who have three attributes: 1) they know their stuff, 2) they have enough confidence to recognize when some of their users also know something about their own equipment and recognize that can help them do their jobs, 3) when their users are clueless, frustrated, and even obstructionist, they still keep their cool and solve the problem.
